The cover of YBC’s Encore October program made Dohee Lee look heroic sized. Tiny and delicate of bone, emotionally extremely powerful, conceptually Lee is a whirlwind like the Rashomon shamaness. In Flux Lee and her collaborators created a fusion of Korean traditional music instruments, Korean musical styles with Western cultural influences, Korean War images and her own and Sherwood Chen’s dancing interwoven with the I Ching trigrams, explained in a program insert. The mixture was a stunner deserving further widespread viewing.
The lobby outside the Forum displayed two boat-like structures covered with even strips of white paper bearing two characters from the I Ching’s trigrams stamped in cinnabar red. At the top of the strip was a stamp with the Korean han gul characters for Flux. A video screen displayed Dohee Lee using the divination sticks for I Ching readings while talking to Community Engagement Diector Joel Tan. When the audience was permitted into the space it was aware something unusual would happen.

The musicians Tatsu Aoki, Francis Wong, Jason Lewis, Jonathan Kroll were seated on individual platforms in back and to stage right before the spare white panels designer and lighter Jose Maria Francos provided to frame the various performers. To stage right, Dohee Lee’s platform displayed a range of drums arrayed like a traditional battery used by accomplished Korean drumming dancers. The four musicians used an assortment of western and Northeast Asian instruments; initially prominent was the Japanese samisen.

Chen sat in the middle of the stage, ceremoniously arranging the divination sticks used with the I Ching, the significance of the combinations, sorting and floor layout remaining unknown. The plectra twang across the samisen's gut strings lent aural emphasis to the deliberate arranging of the sticks. As Chen rose, he moved in the achingly slow tempo of butoh, followed by Lee.

Lee, like Chen, was dressed in white with the white band of mourning encircling her hair. As she postured, legs splayed, torso stretched in visual screams of anguish, emphasizing a movement phrase of horror and protest, she punctuated passages with bak, a six-piece wooden clapper tied with deer-skin looking like a spreading fan-like multiple cover of a Buddhist sutra . The bak’s sharp crack sound slapped the air like the images of the Korean war projected on the white background; it’s little surprise that the user is considered the leader of a traditional orchestra. Interpersed with pictures of happy children, older women in traditional Korean garments, the visual narrative was just clear enough to identify the subject matter; snow, lines of soldiers, war dead, refugees in long lines. Mercifully, these reminders of Korea’s agonizing history half a century ago were not so sharp to divert attention totally from the performers.

For Saturday, Lee was supported in the mid-passage drumming by three young women, Elisa Gahng, Mimi Kim and Cartherine Pyun, playing drums on traditional vertical stands; Lee sat on the floor with a chang’go between Yeri Shon and Kent Hong. Affiliated with the Oakland-based Korean youth center, where Lee is the artistic director, the sextette drummed a set reminiscent of the hypnotic effects African ensembles frequently create, partly by length, but also by intensity, without distractions. Watching the three young women manipulate their drumming sticks, swaying forward and back with the force of their drumming simply increased the aural impression. Following the projected images, the sound burst like defiance, affirmation and enduring Korean culture. In the final minutes, Lee donned a colorful robe and bonnet of celebratory shaman ceremonies and the youth ensemble appeared with the familiar pom pom hats of Korean folk harvest ritual celebration.

Exhibiting the multiple skills of a traditional Korean artist, Lee sang at various moments in this deliberate dance drama, her voice conveying familiarity with the one-person opera style pan-sori which matches flamenco for its haunting, earthy delivery and verbal pungency. At the finale Lee used the style in heavily accented English to thank the audience for being witness,while viewers were given souvenirs, white strips from the two boats displayed in the lobby, two trigrams and the program name stamped in cinnabar-hued ink.

I am here in NY city.
whatever reasons brought me here, i do not care because i already loved it..
it is such great time for not to think.
but, of course, i am still thinking.. but very limited thoughts... very good very nice.. very relax..
I walked alot..
I met my friends, donghoon and kyungwook and i am staying at my old friend wonjong's apt where is just heart of Manhattan.
today, my another good friends, Elisa and Sunmin are coming..
very exciting to see them here in different city..

Traveling always gives me a lot of information that i have never got before... that's why people want to go around this world...
I am also one of those people... want to know and want to do with that.

I met another new people here...
Ekyung and Eunkyu.... at the performance reception..
one of them was dancer.. and i know she was great dancer that worked with Shinja Hong... so i was so exciting to meet her. and she seemed like also excited to see me. very great timing...
i loved it..

i have another show tonight.. then coming back to CA...

왜 그래야할까?
내가 생각하는것과 니가 생각하는것이 틀릴수있는데, 그래서 스스로라는 인격체들이 있는것인데, 왜 모두 같은 류의 인격체로 만들려고 하는것일까??
우린 벌써 교육이란 기관들을 통해 똑같이 만들어진 상품들인데...
이젠 그 공장들의 상품을 폐기시켜야한다. 다시금 제조시켜야한다... 그건 스스로의 공장에서 찍어내야한다.
강요도 필요없다.
스스로 정성껏 부품들을 끼워가며 점검해가며 좋은 상품들을 골라 조립해야한다.. 그게 스스로가 되는것이다.. 가장 손실된 정신이란 부분을 보강시키며 공간을 확장시켜야한다.

우린 너무나도 똑같은 상품들로 살아가려하는 성향이 있다.
그것을 부수고 나와야한다.

역사의 흐름이란 것이 원래 시작과 끝이 하나인 것 아닌가?!
돌고 도는 것. 다시 옛날로 돌아가는것..
새로 시작인 듯 하지만, 전혀 새로운것이 아닌것..
하지만 인간은 그 흐름속에서 사라지고, 다시 태어나고를 반복하여
늘 한사람에게는 새로움이요, 또다른 한 사람에는 그 흐름의 끝에 있는 것 아닌가?!
새로움이란 옛것의 반복..
도희의 새로움도 옛것의 자락을 잡는 곳에서
새롭게 시작한다는 각오로 가면 좋을 듯..

우리민족의 삼대경전
천부경, 고구려의 재상 을파소가 쓴 참전계경, 삼일신고
천부경은 세계에서 가장 오래된 경전이며, 유불선과 음양오행, 주역이 모두 여기에서 비록된다.
통인신라시대 최치원에 의해 백두산 동쪽에 큰 비에 세겨진 천부경을 해적하여 전한다.

여든 한글자로 우주의 법칙 모두를 압축해 담은 번역문을 최치원이 해석했다.
환인천제 시대의 사람들은 아침 저녁으로 이 천부경을 계송하여 낭독해왔다.

일시무시일이니=하늘은 시작됨이 없이 시작된 하늘이니
석삼극 무진본이고= 세극을 나누어도-하늘,땅,인간-삼신 그 본은 다하지 않는다
천일일 지일이 인일삼이라
일적십거 무궤화삼이니라=일이 쌓여서 십이 되는데, 상자가 없어서 삼으로 변한다=일;하늘, 즉 하늘의 정기가 사이고 충만해지는데 그것을 담을 궤가 없으므로 사람으로 변한다는 것이다. 인간은 하늘이 모습을 바꾼것이다.
천이삼 지이삼 인이삼이니
대삼합육 생칠팔구하고=하늘+땅+인간=6이고 7+8+9=24기생기니, 일년의 운행이 24로 나누어지는 것, 훗날 하루의 시간 역시 24로 나뉘어진다.
운삼사성 환오칠하니 일묘행 만왕만래라= 삼이 움직여 사(기)를 이루고 이 기가 오와 칠을 둘러싼다. 오는 오행 즉 모든 물질과 제반 현상이고, 칠을 칠기 즉, 칠정인 마음이다. 태극이 나뉘어 삼극이 되고 이 삼극이 조화로 운행하면 기가 생기며 이가 몸과 마음을 같이 둘렀다고 하는 음양오행이 여기서 나온다.
용변부동본이요=세상만물이 그 쓰임이 변해도 근본자리는 바뀌지 않음이니
본심 본태양이니= 근본 마음이 본래 밝은 빛이니
앙명인 중천지 일할지니= 사람을 우르러 비추어라. 천지중에 으뜸이니라.

It is the tao of heaven to send its energy down shining upon all beings.
It is the tao of earth to send its energy up linking with heaven

It is the tao of heaven to decrease the full and increase the humble.
It is the tao of earth to alternate the full and make the full humble.

It is the tao of spirit beings to harm the full and bless the humble.
It is the tao of humans to dislike the full and love the humble.

The humble is honored to radiate its brilliance.
when the humble is in a lower position, he/she does not lose his/her principle.
thus the superior person is able to carry his/her principle through to the end.

Within the Earth, there is Mountain.
an image of the humble.
the superior person decreases what is excessive and increases what is scarce.
he/she weighs things and makes them balance.

Among the sixty-four gua, only in humbleness are all lines auspicious. it is very special in the I Ching. One can see how much value was placed on the quality of humility by the ancients. to them, humbling oneself did not mean to act negatively by holding oneself back. instead one should act positively by doing something with other people cooperatively and harmoniously. the key is to respect people and treat them equally. only in this way can true peace and harmony be established in a community.

It is the turning point after advance reaches its extreme. Do not become attached to success. this is teh key point of the gua.
Everything happened as cause and effect, never by accident.

Watching the sound but not getting caught up in it, one is totally detached from the world. this gua not only sheds light on meditation but also expounds the truth that people should always keep their eyes open, watching the virtue of a leader. thus a leader should always be sensitive to morality and justice and manifest these qualities to his people.

The great virtue to be watched is above, gentle and obedient in the central position and correct place, he/she exhibits his/her virtue to all under heaven.

Being sincere and truthful, reverence appears. In this way, those below observe him/her and are transformed.

Watching the divine tao of heaven,
the four seasons proceed without error. thus the holy sage adopts the divine tao to give instruction, all under heaven submit to him.

The ancient king examined various regions to observe the people and set forth instruction.

The theme of the gua is to demonstrate the wisdom of watching. there are two aspects of watching, subjective and objective. subjective watching deals with one's self; it is to examine one's inner motives. Objective watching deals with others; it is to watch others' reactions to one's conduct. the wisdom of watching is like looking at a mirror, checking one's original intention and outward conduct. the ancient sages believed that inner sincerity is always revealed through one's conduct.

암울하고 어두운 상황에서 상서로운 새로운 기운이 들어올 때에는 그 기운을 잘 보전하고 굳게 지켜라.
인간의 수행도 마찬가지이다. 수련을 통해 복부의 맨 아래에서 양의 기운이 태동하면 일체 삿된 기운을 막기 위하여 방사도 금하면서 양의 기운을 보호해야한다.
복이 형통한 것은 강한 양이 돌아오는데 내괘 진으로 움직이되 외괘 곤으로 순하게 움직이기 때문이다.

Structure of the ideograph supplies a vivid picture of having achieved one's goal, but not yet having been fulfilld. there is a new cycle to come. It is natural phenomenon that after waxing comes waning;before fullness there was emptiness.
This hexagram ends the sixty-four gua and the three hundred and eighty-yao of the I Ching. But the principle of change continues without end. events in the universe move forward and alternate in cycles.

An image of a sacrificial vessel.
when wood is put into fire,
it is cooking

when the holy person cooked,
he/she was preparing offering to the Lord of Heaven.
When he/she made a great feast,
he/she was nourishing holy persons and those with worthy virtues.

through gentleness,
His/her ears become clear and eyes sharp.
the yielding advances and goes upward.

it obtains the central position
and finds respondence with the firm.
there is supreme prosperity and smoothness.

새로운 시대에 명을 베풀어 새로운 사회적 기틀을 만들어가는 데는 각자의 자리와 역할을 바르게 하고 맡은 바 임무를 충실히 해야한다.

Falling away is decaying.
the yielding want to change the firm.
Unfavorable to have somewhere to go
little fellows are growing and extending.

Act in accordance with the situation and keep still.
contemplating the image,
the superior person comprehends
the alternation of increase and decrease,
Also the alternation of fullness and emptiness.
it is the Tao of Heaven.

All decaying starts at the bottom. In the I Ching, mountain also represents a bed or a house. for this reason, the image of a bed is used to explore different phases of the gua. the five yielding lines are nibbling upward, trying to overthrow the solid. in a decaying situation, the solid stands firm; it is the only fruit that remains uneaten.
totally depends on superior person's firm-mind

Reading this I Ching
this situation is reffering what is going on this world, this society. and they need some help to change the system and enviornment which has pure and wise power like I Ching like our firm and pure mind...
