After Joyful- #10 Fulfillment

this represents carrying out one's duty or fulfilling one's agreement.

fulfillment is made of two characters, shoes and walking.

this means walking with shoes symbolizes moving forward with firm steps, advancing to fulfillment.

Sequence of the Gua: After things have been accumulated, courtesy and righteousness should be fulfilled. thus, after little accumulation, fulfillment follows.

An ancient saying goes,"Courtesy is the obedience of principle to what is proper. Righteousness is the accordance of actions with what is right."

Courtesy and righteousness are duties everyone should fulfill.

the main theme is that a wise man fulfills his duty as cautiously as he would tread upon a tiger's tail; then good fortune can be expected.

How can life be changed? Or healed? San Francisco-based innovator Dohee Lee explores these metaphysical questions in an evocative new work integrating traditional korean performance with contemporrary music,movement and film. Born in korea and now immersed in the Bay Area's experimental art world, Lee is trained in shamanic ritual music and dance and korean percussion. Inspired by the ancient Chinese text I-Ching, or Book of Changes, Lee maps out the book's 64 symbolic hexagrams with a stunning integration of light design, imagery and movement. This YBCA commissioned work features the work of filmmaker and virtuoso bassist Tatsu Aoki; saxpohonist Francis Wong, Johathan Chen on violin and electronics, Jason Lewis on multiple percussion, dancer/choreographer Sherwood Chen and visual artist Thomas Wong.

Bios of Artists

Tatsu Aoki
Born in Japan into an artisan family, Tatsu Aoki began studies in the traditional Japanese performing arts at age 3. Upon arriving in the US in 1977, Aoki has become a leading advocate for Chicago's Asian American community and one of Chicago's most in-demand musicians on both contrabass, taiko (Japanese drums) and shamisen (Japanese lute). As founder and Executive Director of AIRMW, Aoki has initiated and managed several programs to advance the understanding of Asian American culture and community through the arts, including the Annual Chicago Asian American Jazz Festival and the JASC Tsukasa Taiko Legacy arts residency project. His work as an artist and educator in the cultural arts and as a leader in the Asian American community address as well as define the issues facing the community, including the need for quality artistic programs that reflect the Asian American experience.

Francis Wong
Few musicians are as accomplished as Francis Wong, considered one of "the great saxophonists of his generation" by the late jazz critic Phil Elwood. A prolific recording artist, Wong is featured on more than forty titles as a leader and sideman. For over two decades he has performed his innovative brand of Asian American jazz/creative music for audiences in North America, Asia, and Europe with such with such luminaries as Jon Jang, Tatsu Aoki, Genny Lim,William Roper, Bobby Bradford, John Tchicai, James Newton, Joseph Jarman, Don Moye and the late Glenn Horiuchi.
”I choose for my work to build community and to seek out how I, as an artist can meet the challenges that our community faces. In the Asian American community, the biggest challenge is continuity of culture and the impact of assimilation. Through music, I envision a way to create continuity through the integration of tradition and innovation.

Jonathan Chen
Born on April 26, 1974, JONATHAN CHEN’s work includes installation, composition, improvisation, performance, and video. His work has been performed or installed at various venues both in the U.S. and internationally. Chen has collaborated or worked with Tatsu Aoki, Olivia Block, Anthony Braxton, Gene Coleman, Nic Collins, Andrew Dewar, Bill Dixon, Steven Drury, Ensemble Noamnesia, Flux Quartet, David Grubbs, Steven Hess, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Alvin Lucier, Miyumi Project, Paul Modler, Jessica Pavone, Marina Peterson, Peter Rosenbloom, Amnon Wolman, and visual artists Jeremy Chen, Santiago Cucullu, Megan Rodgers, and others. He is currently working on his PhD in Electronic Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, HYPERLINK "http://www.new-york-map.org/new-york-road-map.gif"New York.

Jason Lewis
Jason Lewis graduated from the classical percussion program at San Jose State University, under the direction of Tony Cirone of the San Francisco Symphony, with a B.A. in music. Mr.Lewis has taught privately in the bay area, coached at the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and has performed clinics at schools throughout the San Jose area. He has played with a variety of talented musicians including; Joshua Breakstone, John Stowell, Gary Burton, James Moody, Mark Murphy, Norma Winstone, Larry Coryell, Darol Anger, Regina Carter, Johnny Frigo, James Carter, John Handy, Anton Schwartz , Mark Levine, Peter Apfelbaum, Dmitri Matheny , Cornelius Bumpus, and Kurt Elling. Mr.Lewis has also performed with the San Jose Symphony and the San Jose Civic Light Opera.Besides performing throughout the San Francisco Bay Area with many groups, often with bassist John Shifflett , Mr. Lewis has toured and recorded with Boz Scaggs, Michael Brook, Djivan Gasparyan, Ann Dyer and Taylor Eigsti. He can be heard on numerous recordings as well as TV (Spark on PBS) and Movie Soundtracks (Affliction, Albino Alligator, Ratatouille).
